www.wordswithoutpictures.org is a new photography website by Charlotte Cotton (a contemporary photography curator and author) that is set to discuss theories and issues about photography today. It will feature essays and discussions, as well as podcasts and live debates (so far based in LA). Jason Evans (Fantastic Man, i-D, BUTT, Hanatsubaki ++) has written the first online essay; "Online Photographic Thinking" - which highlights photographic projects intended for the Internet rather than print form, and examines new directions that digital photography and the Internet offer contemporary photographic practice.
Blogs like Yvan Rodic's Facehunter and Diane Pernet's A Shaded View are perfect examples of how digital photography now offer new ways to use the photograph. Fashion speaking, sites like Iqons are tapping in to this, and experimenting with how the web as a medium can affect and influence fashion. It is stimulating to see that kids in Norway (where I am from) feel a part of what is going on in London (where I live) by having the impression that they are, trough instant reports from the likes of DirtyDirtDancing, experiencing the same energy and fluctuation that they see in the online images. DIY web publishing is unquestionably changing the way fashion scenes and (sub-)culture are existing. The acceleration of what is cool or in vogue is sped up so fast a fad can be gone even before it has reached the print (extremely speaking). Yvan have witch Facehunter, and Alistar Allan with DDD (as well as the obvious platforms like MySpace) made young style international in a way it has never been before.
You can't blame the boy next door for stealing your style anymore - he might have seen it on the web (worn by someone who saw you on the web).
